very stylish! My favorite! ROXXX!!!!
cool
This great demo deserves to be called the "No Cooper II" ! 😉
Mad. Wouldn't stand a chance at creating those effects with normal routines! Kudos
This is a really impressive demo. The presentation is really top notch. Holy fff.. what a load of work it must have been to get all this pixel perfect!
These zero bit plane demos are great.
Wow never thought ST could do this. Seems it can control stuff raster wise a lot finer than Amiga can
Amiga copper is 8px (with 4px precision) and it can use all colours. The ST needs 12px to do the same: move.w (an)+,(an). By lowering the number of colours (per scanline) it goes down to 8px as well: move.w register,(an). However, using the 68000 in the ST we can do some instruction pairing and get single columns of colours to 4px, this demo is using that trick quite a bit - it's limited but the overall look/impression is absolutely improved.
@@evldhs yes this was exactly this that baffled me no started to think how this could had been done on Amiga. If one could feed color reg with copper and cpu at same time but then I though that the bus must be blocked and timing issues. (Just pixel art guy with kind of tech knowledge so not a coder) Like sure one can do this “fake4px” with interlaced 4px cycle offset but it’s stellar really 8px. Works nice with soft stuff but for stuff like the logo not. Especially the first logo blew me away resolution wise! 💚💚💚 Btw are you the coder? (If so what is your scene name)
@@litjellyfish Evldhs is Evil from DHS. ;-) SPKR from SMFX did the code in this demo.
Not to forget Tom/SMFX, who did most of the code for the demo! 🙂
@@earx23 thanks. Should had been able to crack that one ;) Tbh I am totally lost and newbie regarding the Atari Scene. Even the Amiga scene I am pretty lost regarding tbh. Came back like three years ago from 30yearish year pause and so many new names and groups (and prods to catch up on) :) Also I must say sometimes I can be almost more impressed on some spectrum / Atari / C64 stuff. And it’s cool when some Atari coder comes and smack the fingers on Amiga coders. I mean even back in early 90s I know Amiga coders feared the 68000 skills of Atari coders even if they did not want to admit it :p Who are you btw? Haha / Iridon DCS/Nah-kolor
The demo and music is great! Love it! Please do more :)
Awesome!
Wow. Great demo. Many effects, cool transitions. What a cool idea this 0 plane compo :)
Hah! the QR code works!.. not sure why I was surprised by that. Anyway, thanks for uploading all these Zero Bitplane demos - some impressive works by everyone involved! Nice to see 2 Life Crew and Ghost greeted - were they there?
Yes they were.
ST goes VCS style and it rocks hard!
Second zero-bitplane demo I’ve seen today, and this is even better than the other one. Utterly jaw-dropping.
Phenomenal demo!
Pure excellence!
Deserved first place (more original effects) but the DHS demo is also excellent👏
super schoen
Wow!
OK, well done - that’s the first jaw-drop moment I’ve seen on the Atari ST since all four borders were opened with a 4096-colour fullscreen back in … 1990? Was it Sync, or Level16? I forget now, but I do know that a full-blown 100% rasters-only demo is something to write home about.
Very impressivve! And great music too! 👌
Yes!
We're not done, ever !
I am surely not a coder so that I cannot really understand the challenge hidding behind this 0 bitplane compo, except that you cannot use any handmade gfx nor anything stored in memory. Sounds insane to me.
It is perfectly fine to use handmade graphics stored in memory. Just not in bitplane (pixel) format. Everything is displayed using rasters of some sort, similar to how oldschool plasmas are done on ST. Everyone in the compo dug deep and went further than most have done before. Big <3 to all participants :)
Ofc it's possible to do pixel graphics in this mode, you just have to use a 8x1 canvas, because this is (normally) the minimum size of a '0bl pixel'.
@@evldhs sick, verynice
No bitmap graphics, cool compo!
yeah men, rasta!
Btw maybe a trick to try is to use instead of a few colors repeately after each other at the screen and let the 68000 change after each other. That might even make a higher res possible? For instance in screen memory <color0><color0><color1><color1><color2><color2><color3><color3><color0><color0><color1><color1><color2><color2><color3><color3> etc and let the 68000 alter the 4 colors. (And it has been a long time coding the Atari ST mostly in GFA Basic with some assembly. So when I say color 0 color 1 color 2 color 3 I mean the first 4 colors in the hardware registers. ) P.S. How many 68000 clock cycles do you have for 8 pixels? Pretty impressive timing calculations
Not for this competition, there were no pixels allowed. Only background colour. The tech you talk of is used in other demos where it combines bitplane data and rapid colour switches. For example our demo from 2020: ua-cam.com/video/lm7D8gmEKJI/v-deo.html (spider screen, tunnel and rotozoom)
@@evldhs Yes, I did understand the competition rules :) I just was wondering how far this could be pushed. (4pixels?) Awesome!
So the 68000 is updating the background color every few pixels? And some clever use of some black lines between them to have some more cpu time right?
It's smashing the background colour a bit yes. But no the black lines are not to save CPU. Just a lame coder doing a black line instead of special case loop (taken dbra is 4 cycles less blabla).
@@evldhs And still enough CPU time for some music and effects. Impressive!
A single register move to the colour register is 8 cycles, and when timing it's one cycle per pixel. There is also the ability to use a 12 cycle instruction to shift everything by 4 pixels.
Amazing !!!! it is ST palette or STE?
ST, the compo was for 1 MB ST.
Amazing!
Waouh ! Excellent ! Design, Sound & FX ! I've missed this one ! Thx
Is this sequenced samples or mod? I assume SS and is done very well. If mod then where did they find the cpu time! End scene is massive.
Loved this demo. I remember trying to break into it, and finding it was a mixture of bitmap graphics and videos along with vector graphics and text ... managed to change some of the text within the code, just for a bit of fun. I was very very very amateur back then
Very nice ST demo 👌
Impressive
Superb ❤
Awesome! Love the soundtrack!
Wow !! Perfectly smooth & colorful effects, groovy tune, overscan ! You always rocks guys !!! Cool invitro prod ❤
Fantastic
Jävlar vad prickigt!
Ja, verkligen... och så fina de var! 🙂
@@dhedberg Och fortiga!!
@@PeranMe Ja, fortiga, men ändå städade! Skötsamma prickar!
Great invitro but small question here: why interlaced screens? To keep the framerate smooth?
Well there's no interlace here, but I guess you mean the empty scanlines in some of the screens. That's indeed to keep the stuff moving at 50 fps. Remember it's plain ST so no scanline addressing trickery possible (like on STe and other machines).
Briletile should do on an Atari ST full screen...like dim did or full screen vectors where no muls cant be used. Well, leonard used, not muls.
You're just need to rotate one point, others are obtained by symetry and interpolation. But you need an efficient projection routine.
I wrote a fullscreen orutine which can do muls. Never used it because it is way too slow.
Brilliant!
Incredible!
Lovely ❤
Groovy tune!
I call shenanigans! More specifically CHEATING! I’ve been to many many Sommarhacks, and NEVER seen mosquitos as small as the ones in this demo! Shame on you!
Cool invite demo, great work guys! 👌
